Gender of nouns in German

In this article, we will look at the words that determine the gender of nouns in German grammar.

In German, the gender of the noun is identified according to its article. That is why the prerequisite is to know the articles. The three existing genders are masculine ( der), feminine (die) and neutral (das).

Let’s start!

1. The masculine gender (der)

These nouns are necessary when it comes to:

Male persons or functions, Days, Month and Season

♦ Der Mann, der Minister, der Präsident

◊ Days (der Montag, der Dienstag, der Mittwoch, der Donnerstag, der Freitag, der Samstag, der Sonntag)

♦ Month (der Januar, der Februar, der März, der April, der May, der Juni, der Juli, der August, der September, der October, der November, der Dezember)

◊ Season ( der Sommer, der Herbst, der Winter, der Frühling)

The words ending with “Ling, ig and ich

♥ Der Frühling, der König, der Teppich.

The weather

♠ Der regen, der Schnee, der Hagel, der Schauer

Nouns derived from verbs

♣ Der Lauf ( laufen), Der Sitz ( sitzen)

2. The feminine gender (die)

These nouns are necessary when it comes to:

Female persons or functions

♦ Die Frau ( but we say “das Mädchen”), die Ministerin, Anwältin

Nouns ending with “Ung, schaft, ion, heit, keit, tät, ik”

♠ Die Führung, die Mannschaft, die Diskussion, die Gleichheit, die Verfügbarkeit, die Identität und die Musik.

Numbers used as nouns

♣ Die eins, die zwei, die drei, …..

Some female functions end with an IN. All you have to do is take this name in the masculine and add an IN in the feminine.

3. The neutral gender (das)

These nouns refer to:

The letters

♦ Das A, das B, das C,…..

Names ending with “lein, chen, um, ment and ma”

♥ Das Instrument, das Studium, das Mädchen, das Fraulein, das Thema

Verbs that at the infinitive are used as nouns.

♣ Das Schlafen, das Essen, das Lernen, etc….

Names formed from English words ending with “ing”

♠ Das Training

Names resulting from adjectives

◊ Das Ganze, das Neue.

ImportantThere are compound nouns in German grammar called Kompositum (Pl. Komposita). In this type of word, to find the corresponding article, you just have to consider the article of the last noun.

Example: Das Flugzeug = der Flug + das Zeug

{Zeug} being the final element, hence the article Das.

Tips: You don’t have to remember everything at once. Just take your time. One after the other. Rushing only leads to superficial understanding.

It’s much easier than it looks.
